DescriptionMourning sampler with plain-weave linen background. Silk threads in black, white, blues, oranges, yellow, greens, pinks, beiges, greys, and browns. Worked in cross, whip, back, tent and french knot stitches. The central picture is of an urn with a weeping figure on the left and a figure with the scales of justice on the right. There are two coconut palms hanging over the figures. The verse is beneath the urn and both are surrounded by common Pennsylvania motifs: grapes, floral sprays and houses with trees.DimensionsHeight x Width x Depth (unframed): 25.1199 × 21.66 in. Historical NotesMourning sampler for George Washington made by Harriet Lenfestey in 1823 probably under the tutelage of Jemina Hartzell, donated by her son B.M. McWilliams. Harriet Lenfestery based her design on the print entitled "Lived respected and Fear'd - Died Lamented and rever'd" by Edward Pember and Samuel Luzarder in 1800.
