DescriptionLarge needlework sampler, embroidered on fine ecru linen; roughly square in shape, at center is an oval medallion, showing a girl lifting a long ribbon, with a garland attached, from an opened box , set upon a plinth, which has a wreath decoration on the face; this center vignette is framed by a trellis-like device, which in turn is bordered by squares picturing fruit, flowers, birds, a trumpeting angel, etc.; at top is a box with the legend; at bottom edge are a pair of young girls, a rose, a willow tree, a tulip, and two boys playing a game of marbles. Sampler has new silk organza lining applied. Sampler is mounted upon a nearly square backer composed of white dibond covered in off-white cotton muslin and padded with polyfelt. Original linen lining or backer was removed and retained. Edges have numerous tears and losses.DimensionsHeight x Width (a - sampler only): 16.938 x 16.938 in. (43 x 43 cm)

Historical NotesThis sampler was made by Elizabeth Drally, who was born in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. She was the daughter of John and Margaret Drally. Donated to the Carnegie Museum by Loretta Hildebrand in 1927. Transferred to Historical Society of Western PA in 1994.
