Historical NotesThis sampler was created by Margaret Sturgeon at age 11.Label TextMargaret Sturgeon was a student at Edgeworth Ladies Seminary, and the school is featured here in a sampler that she stitched around 1834, at the age of 11. The school was established originally in Pittsburgh, then moved to Braddock’s Field, where Sturgeon attended, and then finally moved to the Sewickley Valley. It remained there and offered women instruction in such subjects as Botany, Plain Sewing, and Intellectual Philosophy, until its eventual closing.
