DescriptionThree-gallon capacity stoneware churn, light grey body, with unusually bold and sharp cobalt-blue stencilled decoration; tall form, curves in at shoulder, two pulled lift handles; embossed ring at neck; tall, smooth neck, with internal shelf to hold a lid or dasher assembly (not intact); Albany-slip coated interior; spectacular stencil showing an eagle, facing right, holding in his beak a banner, which has maker information; above is stencilled additional maker's marks; large hand-applied numeral at base; decorative brushed band at neck, and at base of handles.Dimensions14.5 x 8 x 8 in. Historical NotesJames and Leet Hamilton moved from Beaver County, Pennsylvania to Greensboro, Pennsylvania, c.1850, where they worked together for seven years. In 1857, Leet broke away and started his own business, also in Greensboro, until about 1865. James Hamilton & Company was also known as the Eagle Pottery in the 1870's. Part of a collection of stoneware from local manufacturers in the Western Pennsylvania region.
