Historical NotesJewish War Veterans banner, Lawrence County Post 136 from Temple Hadar Israel. Temple Hadar was formed in 1998 when two New Castle, PA temples merged. Jewish War Veterans of the US formed in New York in 1896 in protest of complaints that Jews did not contribute to the Civil War, the Jewish veteran group was known as the Hebrew Union Veterans Association. The union fought ant-Semitism in the Armed Forces and the general public. The union evolved with each war, eventually taking the name Jewish War Veterans. The JWV is the oldest, continuously operating Veteran Service Organization in the country. Although this flag represents Lawrence County the first local post was Post 49, founded in 1933. At least three other posts were established in Pittsburgh: Post 117 in 1935, Post 137 in 1936, and Post 299 in 1945. The Pittsburgh posts worked together to raise funds and to assist veterans, and they worked with posts from surrounding areas, such as Post 181 in McKeesport, and Post 718 in Greensburg. The Allegheny County Council was formed in 1947 to coordinate the membership of and to create policies for JWV posts in the county. Ladies’ Auxiliaries for each post formed and pursued their own activities. In 2007, Pittsburgh’s remaining two posts, 49 an d299, combined to form JWV Pittsburgh Post 499.
