Historical NotesAllegheny County Council of the Jewish War Veterans banner. Although newspaper articles suggest that a similar umbrella group may have existed as early as 1937, the Allegheny County Council of the Jewish War Veterans was officially formed in May 1947 to oversee the organizations’ various and growing activities in Allegheny County. At its height, the Allegheny County Council oversaw the activities of at least six posts and their associated auxiliaries. The Allegheny County Council organized programs involved its constituent posts, including a long-running visitation and site-seeing events for hospitalized veterans at Veterans Administration hospitals in the area. The Allegheny County Council reported to Department of Pennsylvania of the Jewish War Veterans of the U.S.A. Associated auxiliaries include JWV Pittsburgh Post No. 49, JWV Pittsburgh Post No. 117, JWV Jacob Greenfield Post No. 181 (McKeesport), JWV East End Post No. 137 (East Liberty), JWV Bellefield Post No. 299 (Oakland) and JWV East Boros Post No. 718 (McKeesport). By the early 21st century, membership had declined and the two remaining posts in the city--Post No. 49 and No. 299—merged to form JWV Pittsburgh Post No. 499.
