Historical NotesSPARS uniform worn by Dolores Walliser Stewart during WWII. The United States Coast Guard (USCG) Women's Reserve, also known as the SPARS was the women's branch of the United States Coast Guard Reserve. Stewart was born March 12, 1923, in Sharpsburg, Pennsylvania. Her family later moved to Avalon, where she completed high school in 1940. She attended business school shortly before enlisting as a member of United States Coast Guard Women’s Reserve, known as the SPARS, along with a friend (Marie) from Avalon. Walliser conducted her training in Palm Beach, Florida, where she was quartered at the Biltmore Hotel. She was later stationed in New Orleans, Louisiana; Port Arthur, Texas; and Chicago, Illinois, and was primarily responsible for secretarial duties. In July of 1945, she married John C. Stewart, a navigator for the Army Air Corps. After the Stewarts returned home, they lived at 109 Simon Avenue in the North Hills and later moved to Avalon. In addition to caring for their three children, Dolores worked as an administrative assistant for a local church and YMCA. She received a veteran’s recognition in c. 2005. John Stewart was a photographer for Jones and Laughlin.
