Historical NotesThis sofa was made by Amos P. Ellis (1822-1895) for Captain Joseph R. Campbell, both men were grandfathers of donor Jane B. Potter: Ellis is great-great grandfather, Campbell is great grandfather. Ellis was trained in furniture making in Philadelphia and then migrated to Rochester, Pennsylvania around 1860. Campbell was a river boat captain and then operated a ferry between Rochester and Monaca until about 1884. His son Robert Campbell married Amos P. Ellis’ granddaughter Grace Ellis on September 8, 1908. Robert worked as a glass cutter in Rochester before becoming a cashier at the Monaca National Bank. The sofa originally had black horsehair, then velvet before the current floral upholstery.
