DescriptionCollapsible wooden playpen. Nearly square brown wooden framework with open vertical slats on all four sides and metal fittings. Two opposing sides hinge at center in order to collapse. Front side has a child's toy comprised of painted wooden beads on a metal rod. Four feet with metal receptacles with four removeable casters. Bottom platform is comprised of two rectangular particle board halves that fold upward to collapse playpen; top is red and underside is brown and textured; the rear half has a foot with integral caster with wooden wheel.DimensionsHeight x Width x Depth (a-e - Open): 28 x 39.875 x 40.125 in. Historical NotesPlaypen purchased in 1955 by donor Lisa Carroll's parents Mike and Jean Perry. Mike Perry is Italian American and the child of Italian immigrants. The family, including grandparents and aunts and uncles lived on Penn Street in Sharpsburg, Pennsylvania. The Perry’s lived on the 2nd floor of Mike’s sister’s house across the street from their parents. This playpen was used by their 4 children, Lisa (born 2/4/1956), Renee (born 2/25/1958), Michael (born 5/12/1963), and Michelle (born 2/14/1966). It was also used by 4 of their grandchildren: Renee’s daughters Nicole Sweeney (born 4/6/1980) and Erin Sweeney (born 4/27/1983) and Lisa’s sons Terence Sean Carroll (born 7/27/1987) and Patrick Michael Carroll (born 12/13/1990) before finally being retired. The playpen allowed the newest members to be safely included in all family activities.
