Historical NotesThis banner is from the March on Washington, which took place on August 28, 1963. The March on Washington was a march for equal rights, jobs, and freedom organized by prominent civil rights leaders at the time. The march was attended by a staggering number of people from all over the country with at least 250,000 people. The crowds the march drew were evidence of the incredible amount of support that both black and white people were ready to give to the fight for civil rights. The civil rights leaders who led the march were Martin Luther King, Jr., James Farmer, John Lewis, Roy Wilkins, Walter Reuther, A. Philip Randolph, Whitney Young, and Eugene Carson Blake. The banner was made in August 1963 and the bus ticket to the march was issued by the special coordinating committee for Pittsburghers. After the march, the banner was found discarded and the donor, Diane Marshall found and kept it. The coordinating committee consisted of students and activist, Arthur J. Edmunds, Herbert Wilkerson, Rev. Robert L. Kincheloe, Sylvan Libson, Paul R. Normile, Dr. Earl Belle Smith, Gladys McNairy, Joseph H. Sabel, and Molly Yard.
