Historical NotesSTS-37 "Welcome Home" banner from the village of Timber Cove, Texas, where Jay Apt lived. Astronauts and other Johnson Space Center team members have lived in this neighborhood close to the Space Center since 1963. The neighborhood swimming pool is in the shape of a Mercury spacecraft. This celebration was organized by the Mayor of Timber Cove and held in the tree-lined median of Timber Cove Drive near the intersection of Shorewood Drive. Most of the neighborhood residents joined the celebration, where this banner was hung along with an inflated space-suited astronaut figure and other space-themed displays.Label Text"Welcome Home" banner, from the village of Timber Cove, Houston, Texas, 1991 When Apt returned home from his first space shuttle mission his neighbors greeted him with this banner. Apt lived in a noted “astronaut” development, Timber Cove, which had been home to John Glenn, Wally Schirra, and other NASA astronauts and Space Center staff.
