Historical NotesPacket of ten small whole wheat bread loaves given to Jay Apt during the STS-79 flight by Mir Cosmonauts Valery Grigoryevich Korzun and Aleksandr ‘Sasha’ Yuriyevich Kaleri. Bread loaves of this type were used for on-orbit ceremonies welcoming visitors to Mir with bread and salt, a Russian tradition on Earth and in space. Such a ceremony was conducted to welcome the STS-79 crew to Mir, and these spare loaves were a gift made later in the mission to Apt.
