Historical NotesJay Apt flew this crew notebook on his first space mission, STS-37, April 5-11, 1991. The notebook contains one page of notes taken during the mission, cue cards that Apt developed pre-flight and used during the mission, a Ziploc bag in which he stored a number of items during the mission, and additional items. The top of the first used page of the notebook contains Apt’s notes on a procedure mission control asked him to perform prior to re-entry into the Earth’s atmosphere; this block of text contains the circled number one to indicate the block in the Deorbit Preparation Checklist when it was to be performed. The eighth line contains a note that the crew found that the cloth stowage bag, called a caddy, used to store quick release positive locking pins (pip pins) was not a good design (the notation “NFG” stands for no (expletive) good). The items under the heading “Squawks” are notes made by Apt during the mission to be conveyed to the Shuttle team during post-flight debriefings. These include: Airlock upper position lock Apt’s right spacesuit glove A difficult lock on one of the hatches Too much pulp in the orange juice A note for drink selection on Apt’s next flight to limit his pantry drinks to orange juice, coffee, and tea. On the sixth day of the flight the water dispenser in the galley dispensed 1.5 times the requested amount of water on each use. The glasses cleaning wipes (opti wipes) should be double-bagged, since the fluid leaked from some of the single bags. Taped to the inside rear cover of the notebook is a keepsake from the middeck food stowage locker, the menu for each crewmember from dinner (meal C) on the fifth flight day. Red indicates the meal items stowed for the commander (Steve Nagel), yellow for the pilot (Ken Cameron), unmarked (missing a blue dot) for mission specialist 1 (Linda Godwin), green for MS 2 (Jerry Ross), and orange for MS3 (Jay Apt). Crews selected their own food items before the flight from a list of items that they had tasted at the Johnson Space Center food preparation lab. In the Ziploc bag attached to the inside front cover of the notebook, Apt stowed a number of items used on the flight: His nametag worn on his launch and entry pressure suit The data tag from his extravehicular mobility unit (EMU), NASA’s term for his spacesuit. This identifies it as serial number 2011, worn by Apt as EV-2, with part number SED13101492-311. Parts of this serial number suit were used for many years, eventually on the International Space Station. Five Velcro “EV 2” identifiers, used on Apt’s gloves, helmet, and other gear. Apt used the notebook to stow cue cards that he made for various phases of the mission: Post orbit insertion (Post-Ins). “MET” stands for mission elapsed time (the time since launch). GRO Appendage Observations. These were visual observations requested by the Gamma Ray Observatory (GRO) engineers, De-orbit preparations (D/O Prep). Notes on how to set up the Nikon 35mm camera self-timer to take photos of the entire crew. A list of still photographs that Apt had made before the mission that he wanted to take, with checkmarks for ones he took on orbit.” Abbreviations and acronyms used on the cue cards include: OMS-2 MNVR Orbital Maneuvering System second maneuver. The two 6000-pound thrust OMS engines were used approximately 45 minutes after launch to circularize the Shuttle’s orbit. After this maneuver the Shuttle was in a safe orbit, and the post-insertion checklist was begun.
