Historical NotesWorn by the donor, Charles H. Schultz, during a holdup at Boggs & Buhl on June 10, 1921, about 1:25 p.m. on Park Way, East. A shot fired by one of the bandits passed through the hat. He donated the hat to the Carnegie Museum in 1923. Transferred to the Heinz History Center in 1994.Label TextMany American cities witnessed more crime in the early 1920s, including Pittsburgh. Some events occurred in broad daylight. In June 1921, armed bandits robbed a Boggs & Buhl Department Store employee of $45,000 in deposits right in front of the store at 1:25 p.m. The gunmen ran down Federal Street until off-duty police officer Charles H. Schultz wrestled one of them to the ground.
