DescriptionRectangular dark red velvet shroud or Plascanica. Gold and silver core-wrapped embroidery. In middle: picture featuring painted canvas images of body of Jesus surrounded by three women (including his mother Mary, Mary Magdalene, and either Mary Cleophas or Salome), three men (an Apostle John, Joseph of Arimathea, and possibly Nicodemus), and two angels: proper right holding the Communion Host, proper left holding the Holy Cup; all cloaks are embroidered, various beading, halo of mother Mary has "jewels." Greek Orthodox cross in middle background of picture. Bordering picture are words written in Greek.; border of shroud embroidered with stems and flowers. Corners portray painted (on metal?) heads and hands of four men--possibly Gospel writers Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John--holding embroidered books. Edges trimmed in core-wrapped gold metallic fringe. Four gold metallic tassels, the top wrapped around a silver-colored ball, hang from corners. Backside purple velvet. Back and fringe appear newer than body of the piece.Dimensions41 x 68 in.
