Historical NotesThis painting was donated in 1941 by Mrs. Frank Osburn. The artist, David Gilmour Blythe, was a self-taught American artist best known for paintings which satirically portrayed political and social situations. Blythe was also an accomplished portraitist and poet. He moved to Pittsburgh at the age of 16 and worked briefly as an apprentice of Joseph Woodwell. After spending time in the Navy, took up work as an itinerant portrait painter. Other than his brief work with Woodwell, Blythe had no artistic education or training.
