Historical NotesDonor Marion Hester's grandmother, Maria Harrington, traveled on the Lusitania and befriended actress Lillian Russell, who gave her the gown after having dinner one evening. Born in Germany, Maria lived in both Pittsburgh and New York City, where she died in 1922. She came to America with one of her husbands (the last name of Haube). According to Marion, one of Maria's husbands was the co-owner of Republic Bank Co. in Pittsburgh, and still another "designed the Brooklyn Bridge." Lillian Russell (born Helen Louise Leonard) was an American stage actress in the 1880s-1910s. Her fourth husband was Alexander Pollock Moore, owner of the Pittsburgh Leader; after her marriage in 1912, Russell retired from stage and started a multi-faceted career as lecturer, columnist, advocate, recruiter, and activist.
