DescriptionSmall creamware dinner plate, bearing a scorched pattern, caused by combustion of straw used to pack the ware for shipping in a box or barrel; round shape, with deep dish, and somewhat upturned rim; the original white glaze is completely obscured by brownish deposits "straw" contact areas have fired to a blue/purple color, with spots of iridescence.Dimensions1.25 x 7.75 in. (3.2 x 19.7 cm)MarksImpressed marks on base are largely illegible.
Historical NotesPresumably this plate was damaged while still unpacked in a storeroom during the Great Fire. Calling card of "Irene de Love" is affixed to base of plate; handwritten ink inscription reads: "Presented to Historical Society of Pittsburg [sic] Pa. (Irene de leon Love) of Phila. on 6/7/57; in pencil: "Packed in Excelsior Fire 1845". Found in collection.
