Historical NotesSons of Veterans of the Civil War medal belonged to WIlliam Schultz's son. The Sons of Veterans is a fraternal group that was the successor to the Grand Army of the Republic (GAR.) It was formed in 1881 and still exists today. William Schultz was born in Prussia, it is not known what year his parents emigrated. He enlisted in 1861 and was discharged in 1864 at the age of 18. He was wounded in the battle of Fredericksburg on December 13, 1862. After this he transferred to the Invalid Corps and spent the remainder of the war in Washington, D.C.
