Historical NotesThis menorah belonged to Esther and Morris Bialer. It was given to them by their grandfather, Ben Tzion Bialer, on their first Chanukah in Pittsburgh in 1937. The menorah is a symbol of survival and continuity of tradition.Label TextA menorah or hanukkiah is a nine-branched candelabrum used during the eight-day holiday of Hanukkah. Starting with one candle the first night, an additional candle is lit each successive night and a blessing is said. The holiday is celebrated at home and commemorates the rededication of the Temple in Israel after a successful revolt against Greek oppression about 2000 years ago. This menorah was a gift from the donor’s grandfather Ben Zion Bialer to his son and daughter-in-law Morris and Esther Bialer, in 1937 on the first Hanukkah of their marriage.
