Historical NotesLions symbolize both the Jewish people and Judah Maccabee. The menorah is a symbol of survival and continuity of tradition.Label TextA single candle of the chanukiah (menorah) is lit on the first night, and one candle is then lit each subsequent night of the holiday. A ¬shamash, or “helper” candle occupies the raised branch of the chanukiah. It is used to light the others, since it is not permitted to use the holiday candles or their light for ordinary purposes.
