DescriptionBronze commemorative medal consisting of two main parts: The first section is made up of two crossed cannons with a central shield of nine stars and vertical stripes. On the reverse is the pin and the maker's mark. The second section hangs from the bottom of the shield. It is round, and, along the outer edge is commemorative text. At the center of the medal is an image of the facade of the Arsenal. Caption text is beneath the image. The reverse of this portion of the medal has the main image of two crossed cannons pointing upward. Resting between the mouths of the cannons, is a cannonball, above which is a flame. Text around the center, on a belt. Beneath the image is the year.Dimensions1.125 x 2 in. (2.9 x 5.1 cm)InscriptionsRound medal has text along the outer edge "IN COMMEMORATION OF THE EXPLOSION AT THE ALLEGHENY ARSENAL / SEPT-17-1862".
"ALLEGHENY ARSENAL / ENTRANCE" is beneath the image on the medal.
On the reverse of the medal, around the center, on a belt, is "ORDNANCE - DEPARTMENT - U.S.A.". Beneath the image is the date "1909".

Historical NotesMedal was made to commemorate the explosion at the Allegheny Arsenal on Sept. 17th, 1862. With letter from R.C. Bryson, dated 30 June 1959. Found in collection.
