Historical NotesDeck of Aviator standard playing cards from Doc’s Hideout. Label Text“Doc’s Hideout” was hand built by a group of sportsmen near Rockwood, PA in 1966. The camp originally had no electricity or running water, although those things have been added today. It was named after the camp’s oldest member, Doctor Homer Hay, Superintendent of Somerset Schools, who was nearly 80 when it was completed. Doc Hay once told a young member that he would learn more in one day at hunting camp than he would ever learn at school. To this day, the group honors his memory by naming the camp after him. As the vehicle for numerous games of penny ante poker, a sense of fellowship, and rousing deer tales, playing cards are an essential piece of camp equipment for many hunters.
