Historical NotesPittsburgh Steelerette’s uniform used by Loretta Candelore. The donor was a Steelerette during her freshman and sophomore years at Robert Morris University from 1969 to 1971, where she studied secretarial work. Prior to college she went to Elizabeth Forward High School.Label TextThe Pittsburgh Steelers were one of the first teams in the NFL to have cheerleaders. William V. Day, Steelers entertainment coordinator, originated the idea and recruited students from Robert Morris Junior College for the squad. The Steelerettes cheered on their team from 1961 until 1970, when the group disbanded. Sporting relatively modest uniforms, they worked the home field sidelines at Forbes Field and Pitt Stadium, as well as performing at charity events in the off-season.
