Historical NotesTemporary NASA identification badge belonging to Jay Apt. This badge was issued to Jay Apt the first of the three times he was interviewed for the position of NASA Astronaut. The interview process began Sunday April 27, 1980, and lasted through Friday May 2, 1980. The process included comprehensive medical examinations, a one-hour formal interview with the Astronaut Selection Board, and a barbeque dinner as part of the informal interview process. All events were held at the Johnson Space Center in Houston. Apt was in the sixth group of 20 interviewees for the 1980 Astronaut class. He was not among the 19 selected from the 120 interviewed. He was interviewed again at the next selection in 1984, and again in 1985 when he was among the 13 selected.Label TextNASA astronaut application temporary card, 1980 Apt first applied to be an astronaut in 1980. Chosen, with about 120 others, he went through the week long interview process but did not get selected. He applied again in 1984 with the same result. But his persistence paid off and third time proved the charm. Apt became one of the 13 people in the 1985 class of astronauts.
