Historical NotesNASA badge worn by Jay Apt during a Space Shuttle launch site emergency drill on December 1, 1986. The emergency drill was conducted as part of the post-Challenger crash return-to-flight efforts at Kennedy Space Center (KSC). A group of astronauts led by astronaut Frank Culbertson played the part of a Space Shuttle crew during the drill. The “Out of Air” signified that the crewmember issued the badge had run out of the emergency air supply provided as part of the crew equipment at launch and was designed to elicit the proper response from KSC emergency personnel.
