Historical NotesSTS-3 News Media pass worn by Jay Apt. From 1979 through late 1982, Jay Apt was a scientist at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena California (operated by Caltech). JPL scientists Drs. Mike Kobrick and JoBea Way (then JoBea Cimino) decided to see if they could attend the launch of the third Space Shuttle mission on March 22, 1982, from Kennedy Space Center. Through various means they, along with Dr. Way’s parents, obtained press credentials for the launch. Apt’s identifies him as representing Model Rocketeer magazine, the monthly publication of the National Association of Rocketry. All travelled by airline from California to Florida for the launch. Kobrick, Way, and Apt later worked closely together on the Space Radar Laboratory, flown on Apt’s third Shuttle mission, STS-59 in 1994.
