Historical NotesTemporary NASA identification badge belonging to Jay Apt.Label TextNASA astronaut application temporary card, 1980 Apt first applied to be an astronaut in 1980. Chosen, with about 120 others, he went through the week long interview process but did not get selected. He applied again in 1984 with the same result. But his persistence paid off and third time proved the charm. Apt became one of the 13 people in the 1985 class of astronauts.
