Historical NotesSign from the Fort Pitt Candy Company. The Fort Pitt Candy Company began in 1916 on West Carson Street, near McKees Rocks, Pennsylvania, and later moved to Penn Avenue in 1921. The company purchased and sold candy, chocolate, and other sweets from Pittsburgh manufacturers including the Gardiner-Lucas Company, Inc., Pennsylvania Chocolate Company, C.S. Hixon Candy Company, and Hardie Brothers Company. Most of the products Fort Pitt Candy purchased came from large candy manufacturers such as Hershey Chocolate Company, Knickerbocker Chocolate Company in New York, and the William Wrigley Jr. Company in Chicago. The Fort Pitt Candy Company is one of the many historic Strip District businesses to close its doors in recent years. They were located at 1642 Penn Avenue in one of the original Strip District buildings, constructed around 1850.
