Historical NotesFootbridge from Monroeville Mall where “Dawn of the Dead” was filmed in 1978, the follow-up to the 1968 zombie classis “Night of the Living Dead”, both directed by George Romero. The mall planned on remodeling and getting rid of the bridge, and zombie enthusiasts contacted the Heinz History Center to make sure the relic from the cult classic film would be preserved. Romero came up with the idea of filming a follow-up to his 1968 hit while visiting the Monroeville Mall in 1974. He made a deal with the management group at the time to film at the mall starting in November of 1977. They filmed at night to not interrupt the daytime shoppers.
