Historical NotesThis sign was collected at the site of the Duquesne Works of the U. S. Steel Corporation. This sign, probably made in the mill's sign shop, denoteds a series of whistle signals to be used to gain worker's attention in the midst of a very noisy shop.Label TextThese signs from the Duquesne Works mill were probably made in the sign shop onsite. They make it clear that the mill was a place where danger was constantly present. Many signs warning of hazards or saying “caution” or “danger” could be found in the mill to keep employees and visitors alert and aware of the dangers of their surroundings. The whistle signals, which are described on this sign, were necessary to be heard over the din.
