Historical NotesThis WWII US Navy Seabee uniform belonged to the donor's father Thomas McKenna. McKenna enlisted into the Navy in 1943. He was in the Construction Battalion (Seabee). Born in 1914, he grew up in Pittsburgh’s West End and was the youngest of nine children. McKenna served in the Construction Battalion, or “Sea Bees,” from 1943-45 and was stationed in Virginia, Rhode Island, and Hawaii. After the war he returned to Pittsburgh and with his wife, Antoinette, raised a family of four in Mount Washington. Thomas worked for J & L Steel and Western Union and ultimately retired from the P & LE Railroad.
