Historical NotesUnited States Military Academy (West Point) uniform worn by James Cornell Friday. Friday was a member of the class of 1939 at West Point, but did not make it through his first year. He started in July of 1935, after attending a year of college at Duquesne. By the end of January, he had received 79 demerits and was discharged "on account of deficiency in studies" as stated in his West Point record. Friday had grown up in Morningside and attended Central Catholic High School. His family ran the Duquesne Brewing Company. After West Point he went back to Duquesne where he played hockey and majored in mathematics. He enlisted in the Army Air Corps during WWII and was trained as a bombardier and navigator and spent the majority of the war teaching the use of the Norton Bomb Site at Bakers Field, California. After the war he returned to Pittsburgh and ran JA Berger and Company, his father-in-law's wholesale meat and cheese business in the Strip District.
