(44.9 x 86.2 cm)Historical NotesBelonging to Patrick Burns. Groups of usually 6th to 8th graders were responsible for acting as crossing guards for the Lawrenceville area during the time Pat grew up. Pat explained how this was a rather prestigious position and it was custom for the "safetys" to fold thier belts up in a very specific way and sit them on their desks at school, as to boast thier leadership roles. It was apparently considered safe for such young children to act as corssing guards at such a young age until one "safety" was killed in a car accident. Part of a collection belonging to Bernie Burns. The collection documents Firefighters Local No. 1, the firefighting union of which Bernie Burns was the president; his life as a firefighter; and additional items that document growing up in Lawrenceville in the 1960s and 1970s.
