Historical NotesLarge Distilling Company Monongahela whiskey crate, with government tags still attached. The crates in this collection were taken home by a state employee and made into shelves, when taken apart years later they were perfectly preserved. The Large Distilling Company was founded by John Large in 1796 on the banks of the Monongahela River near West Elizabeth, Pennsylvania. They won the grand prize for pure whiskey at the St. Louis World's Fair in 1904 (also known as the Louisiana Purchase Exposition).
