DescriptionCommemorative medal. Topmost section of medal is cast in the shape of an eagle perched atop a shield of stars and stripes, surrounded by a wreath of olive branches. Below this section is an American flag ribbon (stars at top right). At the bottom of the ribbon is another cast piece, depicting a cannon, an anchor, a sword, and a rifle. Text written across a banner, attached to the rifle and sword. Another cast piece in the shape of a Greek cross hangs from the bottom of the anchor. At the center of the piece is an image of two standing soldiers and a seated woman looking out at a ship at sea. Commemorative text is written around the image. Written in the four arms of the cross are four country names.Dimensions1.75 x 4.687 in. (4.4 x 11.9 cm)InscriptionsWritten across a banner, attached to the rifle and sword, is the word "UNITED".
Greek cross piece has text "SPANISH - WAR - VETERANS" / "1898-1902" and on the four arms of the cross are the following (clockwise from top): "CUBA", "PORTORICO", "USA", and "PHILIPPINE ISLANDS" [sic].
Reverse side:
At the center of the cross is the word "UNITED" in front of a background of stars and stripes.
The four arms of the cross are labeled "N", "E", "S", and "W", respectively.
Under the ribbon is the inscription "60460".
Historical NotesCorporal James Knox Lacock (1869-1930) served as company clerk in Company M, First Texas Volunteer Infantry. He was awarded this medal for his service in Cuba in 1898. Found in collection.
