Historical NotesA hard hat used by donor Carol Brown at the groundbreaking for the downtown O’Reilly Theater and Allegheny Riverfront Park, parts of the Cultural District, on April 23, 1997. The donor served as the head of the Cultural Trust in Pittsburgh for its first 15 years and oversaw the transformation of the Penn-Liberty Avenues corridor of the city into the theater and cultural center of town. Theater Square is located at 655 Penn Avenue, in the heart of the Cultural District and is made up of nine floors. Designed by Michael Graves and Pittsburgh-based WTW Architects, the facility cost approximately $33 million. Mascaro Construction Company served as the general contractor of Theater Square. [From The Pittsburgh Cultural Trust website] Headquartered in Pittsburgh--in RIDC Industrial Park, O'Hara Township--Mine Safety Appliances (MSA) makes protective equipment for workers in the military, as well as the fire service, construction, and homeland security industries -- and miners, of course. The company produces air-purifying respiratory equipment, gas masks, and head protection gear, much of which carries the MSA brand. Its thermal imaging cameras enable firefighters and rescue workers to see through darkness and smoke. MSA has operations in international locations. The US military accounts for nearly 10% of sales.
