She was involved in many Jewish philanthropic societies and she was instrumental in founding Montefiore Hospital in 1908.Label TextAnnie Jacobs Davis (1865-1952) emigrated at the age of eight with her family from Russia. She married Barnett Davis (1858-1913), a Lithuanian watchmaker and founder of the diamond merchant firm by the same name which is still in business. She was known for helping others and for her involvement in Jewish organizations. In 1898, in response to the need of Jewish patients in Pittsburgh hospitals for kosher food and the shortage of training opportunities for Jewish doctors, she was asked to start a Jewish hospital. The efforts of the Hebrew Ladies Hospital Aid Society, which she helped to found, were successful; and, in 1908 Montefiore Hospital was opened. Annie Jacobs Davis is known as “The Mother of Montefiore Hospital.”
