Historical NotesPurple Heart medal that was posthumously awarded to Sergeant Charles V. McCullough, who was killed in action during World War II. McCullough served in the European Theater with the 414th Infantry Division and was killed in Germany on November 19, 1944. He was awarded this medal and a Silver Star medal (2017.92.2) for covering the retreat of his unit from an exposed position while wounded. He was 20 years old when he died. Charles McCullough was a native of Homewood South and as a teenager lived in Rankin. He was one of twelve children born to Mary McCullough, who raised her children alone after the death of her husband in the 1920s.
