Historical NotesMitchell Paige was born in 1918 in Charleroi, Pennsylvania of Serbian ancestry. He is a recipient of the Medal of Honor for his bravery in the battle for Guadacanal during World War II. The Serb National Federation tranferred this painting to the Heinz History Center in 2004.Label TextA native of Charleroi, Pa., Paige served in the Marines during World War II. He received the Congressional Medal of Honor when he made a lone stance on Guadalcanal against an overwhelming force of Japanese after they broke through the American line and killed or wounded all the other Marines in his machine gun section. Hasbro honored him as well by creating a G. I. Joe doll in his likeness. The child of immigrant Serbs, this portrait had a place of honor at the Serb National Federation Museum.
