Historical NotesThis portrait was most likely painted between the time of Jacob Ziegler's marriage to Sarah Brinker in Butler, Pennsylvania, in 1835, and Jacob's gold rush journey in 1849. Jacob Ziegler was a prominent publisher and politician in the mid to late 1800s in Butler, Pa. Sarah Brinker (d. 1881) was the daughter of a captain and pioneer tavern keeper, also in Butler. The couple married on June 30, 1835, and had seven children: three sons and four daughters. They were also members of the St. Peter's Protestant Episcopal Church in Butler.
