(24.1 cm)Historical NotesThis head covering was worn by the donor's maternal grandmother, Sima Schrager.Label TextAs a married traditional Orthodox Jewish woman, Sima Shrager (1861-1946) covered her hair as a sign of modesty. Born in Krapivna, Galicia, she came to the United States on the Neckar with her husband Benjamin and eight of their children, arriving in September 1908. They moved to McKeesport where Benjamin Shrager was one of the founders of Congregation S’fard Anshe Galicia. When she left the house during the week she wore this cotton head covering which she had made; and, on Shabbat (the Sabbath), she wore a sheitel [wig].
