DescriptionCollage on rectangular piece of white paper. Front of paper has a black square of construction paper glued to the center with smaller pieces of painted construction paper glued to the center of that. The black piece of construction paper has the lower right corner painted yellow and the upper right corner painted blue. The grey piece glued on top of that has been painted a mixture of blue, orange, pink, red, and purple. The grey piece glued on top of that has been painted mostly orange with a red painted geometric shape along the left side that has a small blue piece of construction paper with white painted spots on it.
The back of the artwork has two different geometric paintings and one drawing. The pencil drawing in the upper left corner is a series of squares and geometric shapes drawn together. In the lower left corner, there is a similar design, but has been painted in with tan, pink, yellow, and brown paint. In the upper right corner, there is another geometric design with tan, periwinkle, purple, green, pink, and red paint.Dimensions7.187 x 7.5 in. Artist and teacher Samuel Rosenberg (1896-1972) had a prolific career in Pittsburgh, leading him to be called the “Dean of Pittsburgh painters.” He is perhaps best-known for his scenes of the Hill District in the 1920s and 1930s. Rosenberg was a beloved presence in the Pittsburgh art world and influenced numerous artists through his teaching careers at the Irene Kaufmann Settlement, Young Men & Women’s Hebrew Association, and Carnegie Tech.
