Historical NotesH.J. Heinz Company EZ Squirt Mystery Color ketchup bottle. This bottle originally contained the Passion Pink mystery color ketchup. Issued in wild colors to appeal to kids, the slimmer bottle fit smaller hands and the thin nozzle could be used to "draw." More than 25 million bottles sold, but the product eventually failed as consumers disliked the artificial colorsLabel TextIntroduced to North America in the 1700s, ketchup (sometimes spelled catsup) probably served as a variation on the fermented fish and soy sauces that the British found in Southeast Asia. Ketchup sometimes featured main ingredients other than tomatoes, such as walnuts, mushrooms, oysters, grapes, lemons, raspberries, and liver. Commercially prepared tomato ketchup replaced homemade ketchup in American kitchens in the 1800s. Hundreds of different brands existed at the turn of the last century. By 1900, Heinz made more ketchup than any other manufacturer in the world.
