This object is part of a collection of Gulf Oil Racing items that belonged to donor Christine Bartell's father, Harry “Chick” Creazzi and that document his career at Gulf. Creazzi worked with famed racecar designer Harry Miller to design the first rear engine race car for Gulf Oil racing in the late 1930s. Creazzi went on to become the head of the racing department at Gulf. Gulf recruited Miller in 1937 when they were attempting to further their research of petroleum products and enter competitive racing. Miller was contracted to build four cars for Gulf and Creazzi assisted him from at the start, they worked out of Gulf’s research facility in Harmarville, Pennsylvania.
