DescriptionPainting is inset on the front and depicts a seated man in military uniform with quill in proper left hand and book in proper right hand; he has a plaid blanket over his legs. The seated man is likely British Army Officer John Forbes. A younger man is standing behind him and gesturing to his left with his proper left hand. The background features soldiers in motion, a wood wheel, and trees on the left. In the right foreground is a flag on a staff. The painting has an off-white border and guidelines in each corner.Dimensions21.688 x 17.813 in., 0.125 in. (55.1 x 45.2 cm, 0.3 cm)SignedArtist signature in bottom left corner in black.
InscriptionsText along bottom edge on front, from left to right: red illegible handwritten text that is partially cutoff; black stamped text "COLOR DEPT."; black printed and handwritten text in bottom right corner "PITTSBURGH PRESS ROTO / FOR NOV 23-58".
Back has adhesive masking tape around the perimeter. Handwritten in graphite along top edge is "446 - Clean QUOTE"; at top center are numbers; in bottom left is "H-146S / Eat to clean & var / Should it be / varnished" (this is an educated guess as the handwriting is difficult to read); and in the bottom right is "18 ¼ x 22 ¼ / GREY / GESSO" (this text has lines drawn over it).
