Historical NotesSwift Mission Brigade pin. In 1887, Major E. Morgan McCombs of the First Presbyterian Church of Allegheny established the Elliot E. Swift Mission Band, later known as the Swift Mission Brigade, a quasi-military organization that aimed to teach boys discipline, military order, and inspire them for mission work. The attendees were also given religious training, in addition to military training. It was named for Dr. Elliot E. Swift, a popular pastor at First Presbyterian Church. By 1895, the Brigade had 215 members with around 4,000 participated by the time it dissolved in 1969.
