DescriptionRectangular wooden munitions crate, possibly made of pine. Originally painted red with faint/dull red coloring remaining in areas. Dovetail joints. Clamshell lid has two iron hinges on the reverse of the crate. Hinged iron latch on lid connects with iron loop on front of box for closure. One long horizontal wooden handle mounted on each short side; each handle has two holes on the top face. Bottom panel is missing. DimensionsHeight x Width x Depth (Closed): 11.75 x 22.75 x 14.25 in. InscriptionsInside lid has handwritten text and numbers on the viewer's right half in graphite and ink.
MarksTop section of hinged latch on lid has imprinted text "C B TIMPSON & LAWRENCE / 167 SOUTH ST N Y".
Proper right short side has white stenciled text in paint: "8 12 PDR GUN" above handle and "SPH...AS" below handle.
Proper left short side has white stenciled text in paint: "8 12 PDR GUN" above handle and "SPH...CASE" below handle.
Inside lid has black stenciled inverted text in black paint "ALLEGHENY / ARSENAL / MAY 1861".
Historical NotesPacking crate for field ammunition stamped Allegheny Arsenal. This type of crate would have held eight 12-pounder spherical case shot.
