DescriptionDog crate. Domed, rectangular crate of wood and metal slats supported by wire, wood, and metal frame. Door on the front and a spring-loaded chute above for food. Maker's mark on proper left side near back top corner. Stenciled text on top has owner's name and on front has feeding instructions. Two removable floor boards made of wood. Metal padlock. Gray metal L-shaped hollow tube or chute with 90-degree bend at one end; fits inside the crate where the water connection is indicated.Dimensions32.25 x 24 x 42 in. (81.9 x 61 x 106.7 cm)

Historical NotesPurchased by donor Mark Schumick at an estate sale. Absalom Backus, Jr. (1824-1901) and his sons were manufacturers of dog crates and woven boxes in Detroit, Michigan. Henry N. Backus patented this animal crate in 1902, patent number 698782 designed for shipping fine dogs and other valuable animals.
