Historical NotesChallah cover from a reunion event held in Doylestown, Pennsylvania in June 2004. The B’nai B’rith Youth Organization played an integral role in Rochelle S. Friedman’s childhood and credits it with providing a safe and supportive space for children that came from broken families. She served as chapter president and was known as Havdalah Weiss (maiden name). Rochelle S. Friedman was raised in the East Liberty neighborhood of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. She attended Rogers School and the University of Pittsburgh for both undergraduate and law school. Friedman served as a judicial law clerk to Judge James R. McGregor of the Court of Common Pleas of Allegheny County and as solicitor to Robert N. Peirce, Clerk of Courts of Allegheny County. After three failed attempts at running for the Court of Common Pleas, she won a seat on the Commonwealth Court of Pennsylvania and served from 1992 until her retirement in 2016. She was notable for her defense of the first amendment, the rights of women and minorities, and other civil liberties.
